The Roads in the Wood

“All we have to do is decide what to do with the time  that is given to us ….” (Gandalf the Grey) Ah, if only that was as simple as it sounds. But how does one decide what to do with one’s life? How do you know what your purpose is, or what you love doing above all else? I have come to that difficult season in life where I have to choose a career. Yet it is so difficult for me to decide what I want to do for what could be the rest of my life. I want to do something that I love doing, but also something that impacts and helps others. But I have not found out what that something is yet.

We all eventually reach this stage in life. Some are fortunate enough to know exactly what they want to study and what career they want to pursue. Then there are those of us who have to strive and pray and pray, wondering and worrying about the future, hoping that there is a reason why we are this earth. Questions like “What is my role on this earth?”, “Why am I here?” and “What is it that God made me for?” stream through our minds and when they remain unanswered for so long, one can begin to feel a little lost and hopeless.

This post may seem just like ramblings of what is pressing on my mind. Yet I know that I am not the only one out there asking questions like mine. I want to encourage myself and you with the simple fact that God knows your future and that He is in control. There is a reason why He made you and He will reveal that reason in His own time. So as we continue to worry and seek and feel utterly frustrated, let us try to be patient: our time will come too.

  1. Fabulous post as always Jess. Thanks for posting this. Sometimes I don't want to waste my time on this earth, but then at the same time I don't know what to do to allow my life to have purpose and meaning. I too am asking God recently what my purpose is on this earth and why I'm here. But I think even though we don't know what our purpose may be on this earth right now- we can pray that God could use us in such a way to impact the world and do something amazing in our lives! : ) Hope you find God's purpose in you- just your blog is such a fabulous purpose for your life!! : )

  2. Yep, I'm in that time of life, too.
Here's what I have found about deciding upon a career:
At first I wanted to get into something fun and different. But as I kept exploring and taking small courses on things that I thought interested me, I found that I can only be happy if I am pursuing what I love. I believe that God gives each of us talents to be used for Him and for the good of other believers. And to ignore those talents and try to choose a different career seemed a waste of the talent that He especially picked for me.
My strong points are art and music, so I have chosen to start an art class for kids to help pay for a music Education degree, while I continue to work on my own art skills as well. I'd love to start selling my own artwork someday, too.

Imagine getting to heaven and having God ask what you did with that special talent that He gave you. I want to be able to say that I took my talent(s) and stretched it as far as I could!!

The greatest gift in life that we can give to others is encouragement and the love of Christ. No matter what career path you end up choosing, there will always be people to help, to love, and to guide. That's one exciting thing about the career path I have chosen. Being a teacher means that I will have the opportunity to encourage others to do the same thing with their God-given talents...to stretch their abilities beyond what they ever imagined possible, all the while giving the glory to God!!

Sorry to be so long winded!! :) :)

P.S. Just remember, you don't have to "find" God's will for your life--it's already there in His word for you to drink up.

    P.P.S. Matthew 25

  3. Great post, Jessie. Although I know what I want to do with my future, I'm slightly scared that God will change it. But my thoughts are not His, and His ways are not mine. I need to keep reminding myself that God does have my future and this He IS in control.
    Thank you for sharing!

  4. @Britt, thanks so much Britt! You are very sweet!

@Sarah, thanks for your encouraging comment. Sounds like a great idea! I am considering becoming an English teacher, but I really don't know yet if that's my passion. But God will show me in His own time. What you say is so true :)

@Tane, thanks for your comment, Tane! Just remember that His plan for your life is better than your own, so before making a decision, pray about it :)

  5. Thanks so much for this! I am at the same point- not completely sure how God is leading me, but impatient to find out. The hardest thing for me is seeing how seemingly everyone else knows exactly what they want to do with their life, which makes me feel like I'm the only one that doesn't. :) I'm so thankful to have an awesome God who does see my future as well as the whole big picture. I'm looking forward to following Him wherever He leads me, even though that's not clear right now.

I'll be praying for you, too, as you seek for direction.
